A.M. Klein poet, novelist lawyer and activist journalist much involved in the issues of Jewish identity in Canada and internationally especially in the post World War II period. Klein began publishing poetry in the 1930's with collections published in New York and Philadelphia culminating with The Rocking Chair and Other Poems (1948) for which he won the Governor General's Award. His novel, The Second Scroll (1951) about the emotional and physical struggle of Zionism and the return to Israel theme is a particularly powerful and haunting evocation of the post Holocaust period of international Jewish history. Klein was a bilingual product of Montreal Jewish life, a graduate of McGill University and the University of Montreal, Klein practised law and worked in the area of public relations, journalism and other causes of his community. Ill health forced him out of the public eye.
